Hello everyone!
What a nice new face and design to the Corfu Club website! Congratulations to Emma and her team for all the effort AND THANK YOU, I so look forward to logging on during the dark autumn evenings to come...
Despite the gloomy economic crisis Corfu is still going on, Liston was packed at least during August evenings, the beaches not so, unfortunately. I have mentioned this on the forum and other Corfu forums, it is so important to get even more independant low cost flights, with independant travellers, flying to Corfu, especially from Scandinavia (not one flight from here, except for charter flights) and also other countries of course. Although it is improving slowly thanks to Easyjet, who opened up a new flight from Milan this summer. The flight we caught from there (via Copenhagen), was fully booked.
For the tourist industri in Corfu charter flights is not the future as the large companys are now investing more and more in 'all inclusive' (not a first choice for Corfu, as huge hotels are needed and the guests are all staying and eating international food on site). This alternative is getting very popular, especially among families with children in Scandinavia, but it is mainly the global companies that are making a profit.
From a visitors point of view - this summer my son and I were looking for free wifi places (tavernas and cafés) and we found some nice places where we spent some considerable time eating, surfing on the internet and reading (Deborah Lawrenson's book 'The Art of Falling', thank you Deborah if you read this, the book is as sensous and beautiful as 'Band of Gold and Blue'!). Free wifi to be found round the island is positive news and certainly more and more important for visitors. Before we could make do without (it was actually a relief), but this year, with my son being 15 years old and I in need to check bank balance after couple of weeks, weather update, news and so on it was a necessity. I especially noticed this when I was stranded in Corfu in April during the vulcanic ash (was I lucky...), and in need of constant news update without having to ring family and friends on expensive mobile calls.
And how absolutely lovely and friendly the Corfiots are, wherever we go, to our favourite places, everyone recognise us and greet us with a warm welcome. Despite the crisis the people's warmth are amazing. Just hope business will improve for the years to come.
I am also getting very fond of Benitses, it has really picked up since the marina and the whole area is lovley. Needs to be promoted and it is so close to town, which is another must. We tend to spend more and more time in town and have also found some good places for a quick dip in the sea (marina jetty, Anemomylos and Kanoni, behind the old Hilton hotel) in connection with strolling round town, having coffee and lunch and long walks along the Garitsa Bay.
Has anyone any comments on the future of Corfu, any nice memories from this summer to share?
Regards from Christina
Dear Christina and fellow members, I totally agree the new site is fab and i am sure it will develop into an excellent asset for the island. Best wishes to all - Sophie.
P.S. off to explore....convert2cash looks very interesting !!!
Thank you for your feedback, very much appreciated. It is great news about new flight paths and if anyone else hears of more please let us all know. I think the challenge for tourism lies in quality verses value for money when people get here. I have to say there is some pretty outrageous pricing going on. It's all very well making a quick gain, but will they come back. It is immensely frustrating when there are many enterprises really pulling their weight and trying to make a difference for the visitor experience to be stained by memories of paying over the odds for either lack of quality or quantity. I shall be posting a forum topic tomorrow about worthwhile tavernas. Fond memories of picnicing under an olive tree at Cape Plaka out in the sticks behing Giannades. If you haven't been there you really don't know what you are missing. It is a stunning area. Sorry Tom, but sunset and views such as those must be shared - visit www.swindonaccommodation.co.uk/corfu.htm
