  My significant other and I take our dogs to the beach several times a week, during the off season. We're always astonished by the amount of garbage that washes off, especially after storms.

  We collect dirftwood, some to make decorative accessories for the house, and the rest for the fireplace. This is not only a great exercise for us, it reduces the cost of heating the house, but it also contributed to cleaning up the beach.

  Sadly, it's a drop in the ocean.

  At leat driftwood is bio-degradable, but what about the hundreds of water bottle and plastic bags?

  Could we put together a "clean-up corfu beaches" program where we regularly meet to collect plastci bags and water bottles? All we'd need are rubber gloves, and someone to collect the fruit of our labor.

  If someone out there has an idea on where we could take these bottles afterwards, this would be fantastic. While we're at it, some press on it to raise awareness, wouldn't hurt either.

  Nelly I think this is a great idea and one that deserves to be promoted. It is so heartening to hear that there are people out there that feel the same way about rubbish and does it need to be limited to beaches? Because I am busy organizing the next Corfu Enterprise Exhibition is this something you would be able to lead? If so could it gain momentum in the form of a group - - make it fun, let's say 'thrash busters' as opposed to ghost busters and is there a possibility that walking enthusiasts could partcipate. I am so in favour of your suggestion I am going to ask my IT guys to link the forum to the home page and to mail boxes. The very essence of the Corfu Club is to support and promote positive initiatives. Emma

  Emma, If I made this suggestion, it is indeed because I am willing to take the lead on it. Of course we don't have to stop at beaches, I was thinking of starting with beaches.
  I think we should also approach schools and try to sensibilize children firt, as this is their future we are thinking of. If we can show them what the future hold for them, if we don't start acting, perhaps they can train their parents.
  I have a few ideas on the subject, perhaps we could discuss it more at length face to face, if you have a few minutes next week.

  I'm in Kastania, about 2km South of Jumbo's, so the city works better for me
